紙葉と果実――デイヴィー・クロケットの本のエピグラフ The Leaves and the Fruit: Epigraph of Davy Crockett's Book [Marginalia 余白に]
記事「ポーが書評した本 (24) デイヴィー・クロケットの『北へ東へカーネル・クロケットの旅の記』 (1835) Books Reviewed by Poe (24): _An Account of Col. Crockett's Tour to the North and Down East_ by Himself」でとりあげたデイヴィー・クロケットの本には、タイトルページにエピグラフが記されていました。

"When thou dost read a book, do not turn the leaves only, but gather the fruit."
「本を読むときには、紙葉をめくるだけでなく、果実を集めなさい。」
leaf というのはページ、というか、正確には裏表の2ページの紙1枚を指します（なんか、むかし「本の部分の英語名称メモ Names of Parts of a Book」で語ったような）。
本の "book" も語源的には「木」にたどりつくはずですから、植物のイメジで貫徹しているわけでしょう。
で、典拠はなんだろう、と検索をかけたのですけれど、あんまりヒットせず、多くはデイヴィー・クロケットのこの本にかかわるのでした。
しかし、（引用符に入っていることだし）デイヴィーが考える英語とは思われない。
ノリ的には、エピグラフというよりも、エクス・リブリス（蔵書票）に掲げられる文句に近いものを感じますけど。
ということで、通常の検索状態の現在のところはわからないのですけれど、ひとつ、各国語の文句が見つかりました(アンティーク・ショップのウェブ・カタログより）――

ありゃ。四カ国語が異なりますね。

で、これはどうやら現実の自然界での植物の扱いについて書かれているようなのでした。だから「紙葉」じゃありません。（ヒユ表現がもう一回現実に戻されてヒユになるというような運動）。
