On what authority do you spell thus?"

(1) Emily Schotten (1790-1861)→ William W. Ellsworth

(2) Frances Julianna (1793-1869)

(3) Harriet (1797-1844)

(4) Mary (1799-1847)

(5) William Greenleaf (1801-69)

(6) Eliza Steele (1803-88) → Henry Jones (1801-78)
その娘 Emily Ellsworth Jones (1827-69) は Daniel Jones Day と結婚
Rodney W. Day (b. 1883)

(7) Henry (1806-07)

(8) Louisa (b. 1808)

II. 24, 1851, at Charlotte, Chatutauqua Co., NY - April 26, 1891、39歳で死去)
CharlesWebster.jpg
Charles Luther Webster (1851-91) image via "Charles Webster" <http://www.twainquotes.com/interviews/WebsterInterview.html>

(2) William Luther Webster (born Oct. 15, 1878, at Fredonia) → 1911年2月11日ロンドンで Charlotte Hudgell と結婚。

(3) Samuel Charles Webster (born July 8, 1884, at 214 W. 125 St., New York City) → 1920年6月15日New York のUniversity Place Church でDoris Webb (?

そして、ヴァッサー大学の Jean Webster McKinney Family Papers (これは、ウェブスター家とマーク・トウェイン関係と、コナー家の三つの家系の資料から成っているわけですが、1977年にウェブスターの娘夫婦の寄贈ののちに、整理されて、少なくともWeb上ではMark Twain Papers と Jean Webster Papers というふうに分類されて中味が示されているようです(1977年に印刷された20ページのパンフレットは Alan Simpson, Mark Twain Goes Back to Vassar: An Introduction to the Jean Webster McKinney Family Papers [Published for the dedication of the Francis Fitz Randolph Rare Book Room in the Helen D. Lockwood Library, May 6 1977] )。

26.40 [DD.30] Births in Webster family, list beginning with Benjamin Webster, born 27 Jan 1798
26.41 [DD.31] Marriages in Webster Family" list beginning with marriage of Benjamin Webster to Sophia Chandler, 29 May 1823
26.42 [DD.32]

Webster genealogy chart, n.d.

III.

・New York 州 Charlotte 在の Mrs. Calvin Whitney 宛の手紙を Maria [=Mrs.

Marie Bashkiertseff's Spring Without a March Wind [Marginalia 余白に]

For a long time now I have been saying to myself that I was going to be ill, without really believing it.  But enough of this, I should not have had the opportunity to give you all these insignificant details, if it were not that I have been waiting for my model, and I might as well spend the time grumbling as doing nothing.
There is a March wind blowing, and the sky is gray and lowering.
I began my picture a rather large one in the old orchard at Sevres yesterday.  It is a young girl seated under an apple-tree in blossom, that stands, with other fruit-trees in blossom also, in a grassy field sown with
violets and little yellow flowers, like stars.  The girl sits with half-closed eyes, in a revery.  She leans her head in the palm of her left hand, while her elbow rests upon her knee.
The treatment is to be simple, and the spectator must be made to share in the intoxication produced in the girl by the breath of Spring.  The sunlight plays among the branches of the trees.
The picture is to be about five feet in width, and a little more in height.
So, then, my picture has only received a number 3; and it will not be even hung upon the line not even that !
This has caused me a feeling of discouragement, hopeless and profound.  No one is to blame, however, if I am not gifted with genius.  And this feeling of discouragement shows me that if I ceased to have faith in my genius I could no longer live.  Yes, if the hope of success should again fail me, as it did this evening, then, indeed, there would be nothing left me but to die.
[Marie Bashkiertseff, Journal, March 24, 1884.  Mary J. Serrano, trans., Bashkiertseff: The Journal of a Young Artist, 1860-1884 (New York: Cassell, 1889), pp. 375-376]

Marie Bashkiertseff, Spring [Printemps] (1884)

Ophelia and the Willow Tree [Marginalia 余白に]

Queen Gertrude:
There is a willow grows aslant a brook,
That shows his hoar leaves in the glassy stream.
There with fantastic garlands did she come
Of crowflowers, nettles, daisies, and long purples,
That liberal shepherds give a grosser name,
But out cold maids do dead men's fingers call them.
There on the pendant boughs her corronet weeds
Clamb'ring to hang, an envious silver broke,
When down her weedy trophies and herself
Fell in the weeping brook.  Her clothes spread wide
And, mermaid-like, awhile they bore her up;
Which time she chaunted snatches of old tunes,
As one incapable of her own distress,
Or like a creature native and indued
Unto that element; but long it could not be
Till that her garments, heavy with their drink,
Pull'd the poor wretch from her melodious lay
To muddy death.

State Normal and Training School

The First Mention of R. L. S.」で引用した中に、1年生の12月の時点で(ということは11月の誕生日を迎えた後です)「18年というブランクを埋めるために〔空白の18年間を背負っているので 〕because there are eighteen blank years behind me」、フツウの女の子たちに追いつくべく必死に本を読んでいる、という記述があって、あらためて気になりました。

「ジェルーシャは、17年間の人生で、一度もふつうの家に足を踏み入れたことがなかった in all her seventeen years, had never stepped inside an ordinary house (p. 6)」という冒頭の枠物語「ブルーな水曜日 "Blue Wednesday"」の記述と同じくヘンな感じ。

Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster - Project Gutenberg

(1)  My room is on the north-west corner with two windows and a view.  After you've lived in a ward for eighteen years with twenty room-mates, it is restful to be alone.  This is the first chance I've ever had to get acquainted with Jerusha Abbott.  I think I'm going to like her.

(2)  What do you think, Daddy?  The English instructor said that my last paper shows an unusual amount of originality.  She did, truly.  Those were her words.  It doesn't seem possible, does it, considering the eighteen years of training that I've had?  The aim of the John Grier Home (as you doubtless know and heartily approve of) is to turn the ninety-seven orphans into ninety-seven twins.

(3)  I have a new unbreakable rule:  never, never to study at night no matter how many written reviews are coming in the morning.  Instead, I read just plain books--I have to, you know, because there are eighteen blank years behind me.  You wouldn't believe, Daddy, what an abyss of ignorance my mind is; I am just realizing the depths myself.  The things that most girls with a properly assorted family and a home and friends and a library know by absorption, I have never heard of.

(4)  She's [Julia Pendleton is] getting quite interested in me, because I say such funny things.  I try hard not to, but they do pop out when I'm surprised--and I'm surprised most of the time.  It's a dizzying experience, Daddy, to pass eighteen years in the John Grier Home, and then suddenly to be plunged into the WORLD.

(5)  Don't be outraged, Daddy.  I am not intimating that the John Grier Home was like the Lowood Institute.  We had plenty to eat and plenty to wear, sufficient water to wash in, and a furnace in the cellar.  But there was one deadly likeness.  Our lives were absolutely monotonous and uneventful.  Nothing nice ever happened, except ice-cream on Sundays, and even that was regular.  In all the eighteen years I was there I only had one adventure--when the woodshed burned.  We had to get up in the night and dress so as to be ready in case the house should catch.  But it didn't catch and we went back to bed.

What do you think is my latest activity, Daddy?  You will begin to
believe that I am incorrigible--I am writing a book.  I started it
three weeks ago and am eating it up in chunks.  I've caught the secret.
Master Jervie and that editor man were right; you are most convincing
when you write about the things you know. [. . .]  I am a realist now.  I've abandoned romanticism[. . .].  (p. 110)

Ophelia and the Willow Tree」のからみです。

[From their habit of going headfirst down a tree trunk]〔「頭を下にして木の幹を降りる習性から」――ブラケッツ[ ] に語源的説明がくるのはOED 以来の伝統〕   Cf devil-downhill 〔これは次の見出し語ですが、devil downhead と同様に = a nuthatch〕
1 =white-breasted nuthatch.
1917 (1923) Birds Amer. 3.200, White-Breasted Nuthatch―Sitta carolinensis carolinensis . . Other Names. . .  Devil Downhead.  1917 Wilson Bulletin 29.2.84, Sitta carolinensis.―Devil downhead. 1946 Hausman Eastern Birds 433, Sitta carolinensis . . Devil Downhead.  1956  MA Audubon Soc.  Bulletin 40.127, White-Breasted Nuthatch.  Devil-down-head (Mass.  In clambering about trees, it seems as much at home head-downward as in any other position.)
2 =red-breasted nuthatch.
  1955 Forbush - May Birds 354, Red-Breasted Nuthatch―Sitta canadensis . . Devil-down-head.

The Lied and Art Song Text Page の"

YouTube で wander-thirst で検索をかけると、The Hall Brothers というフォーク・デュオの2001年のアルバム Time and Tragedy 所収の "The Wander Thirst" がヒットします。――

"The Wander Thirst - The Hall Brothers" (2:47) posted by "doctordunc" on September 25, 2006: "

Photo montage video for the song The Wander Thirst by popular acoustic duo The Hall Brothers (taken from their 2001 album Time and Tragedy) The music was written by Duncan Hall, the words are an old socialist poem. Most of the photos are from West Cork, Ireland. The moving image is the grave of Arthur Ransome and his wife Evgenia, in Rusland in the Lake District."

"03 Wander thrist [sic]" (1:23) posted by "fshadikhan" on March 21, 2009: "Wander-thirst poem by P.C.A.I. students."

Wander‑thirst
                                                                                Gerald Gould

Beyond the East the sunrise, beyond the West the sea,
And East and West the wanderlust that will not let me be;
It works in me like madness, dear, to bid me say good-by!
For the seas call and the stars call, and oh, the call of the sky!

I know not where the white road runs, nor what the blue hills are,
But man can have the sun for friend, and for his guide a star;
And there's no end of voyaging when once the voice is heard,
For the river calls and the road calls, and oh, the call of a bird!

Yonder the long horizon lies, and there by night and day
The old ships draw to home again, the young ships sail away;
And come I may, but go I must, and if men ask you why,
You may put the blame on the stars and the sun and the white road and the sky!

あ、3月19日付の "Daddy Long Legs (just about done)"  <http://ldiehl.blogspot.com/2009/03/daddy-long-legs-just-about-done.html> のほうが「ほぼ」完成作品みたいです。

(1)  Jerusha had an imagination--an imagination, Mrs. Lippett told her, that would get her into trouble if she didn't take care--but keen as it was, it could not carry her beyond the front porch of the houses she would enter.  Poor, eager, adventurous little Jerusha, in all her seventeen years, had never stepped inside an ordinary house; she could not picture the daily routine of those other human beings who carried on their lives undiscommoded by orphans.
("Blue Wednesday")

(2)  You only wanted to hear from me once a month, didn't you?  And I've been peppering you with letters every few days!  But I've been so excited about all these new adventures that I MUST talk to somebody; and you're the only one I know.  Please excuse my exuberance; I'll settle pretty soon.  If my letters bore you, you can always toss them into the wastebasket.  I promise not to write another till the middle of November.
(October 25)

(3)                                         After chapel, Thursday

What do you think is my favourite book?  Just now, I mean; I change every three days.  Wuthering Heights.  Emily Bronte was quite young when she wrote it, and had never been outside of Haworth churchyard.  She had never known any men in her life; how COULD she imagine a man like Heathcliffe?
I couldn't do it, and I'm quite young and never outside the John Grier Asylum--I've had every chance in the world.  Sometimes a dreadful fear comes over me that I'm not a genius.  Will you be awfully disappointed, Daddy, if I don't turn out to be a great author?  In the spring when everything is so beautiful and green and budding, I feel like turning my back on lessons, and running away to play with the weather.  There are such lots of adventures out in the fields!  It's much more entertaining to live books than to write them.

(4)  He [Jervis Pendleton] spent the summer here once after he had been ill, when he was about eleven years old; and he left On the Trail behind.  It looks well read--the marks of his grimy little hands are frequent!  Also in a corner of the attic there is a water wheel and a windmill and some bows and arrows.  Mrs. Semple talks so constantly about him that I begin to believe he really lives--not a grown man with a silk hat and walking stick, but a nice, dirty, tousle-headed boy who clatters up the stairs with an awful racket, and leaves the screen doors open, and is always asking for cookies.  (And getting them, too, if I know Mrs. Semple!) He seems to have been an adventurous little soul--and brave and truthful.  I'm sorry to think he is a Pendleton; he was meant for something better.

(5)  Don't be outraged, Daddy.  I am not intimating that the John Grier Home
was like the Lowood Institute.
(May 4)

(6)  During our week of rain I sat up in the attic and had an orgy of reading--Stevenson, mostly.  He himself is more entertaining than any of the characters in his books; I dare say he made himself into the kind of hero that would look well in print.  Don't you think it was perfect of him to spend all the ten thousand dollars his father left, for a yacht, and go sailing off to the South Seas?  He lived up to his adventurous creed.  If my father had left me ten thousand dollars, I'd do it, too.  The thought of Vailima makes me wild.  I want to see the tropics.  I want to see the whole world.  I am going to be a great author, or artist, or actress, or playwright--or whatever sort of a great person I turn out to be.  I have a terrible wanderthirst; the very sight of a map makes me want to put on my hat and take an umbrella and start.  "I shall see before I die the palms and temples of the South."
(August 10)

(7)  It's awfully funny to think of that great big, long-legged man (he's nearly as long-legged as you, Daddy) ever sitting in Mrs. Semple's lap and having his face washed.  Particularly funny when you see her lap!  She has two laps now, and three chins.  But he says that once she was thin and wiry and spry and could run faster than he.
Such a lot of adventures we're having!  We've explored the country for miles, and I've learned to fish with funny little flies made of feathers.  Also to shoot with a rifle and a revolver.  Also to ride horseback--there's an astonishing amount of life in old Grove.  We fed him on oats for three days, and he shied at a calf and almost ran away with me.
(August 25)

(8)  Give the Home my love, please--my TRULY love.  I have quite a feeling of tenderness for it as I look back through a haze of four years.  When I first came to college I felt quite resentful because I'd been robbed of the normal kind of childhood that the other girls had had; but now, I don't feel that way in the least.  I regard it as a very unusual adventure.  It gives me a sort of vantage point from which to stand aside and look at life.  Emerging full grown, I get a perspective on the world, that other people who have been brought up in the thick of things entirely lack.
(March 5)

(9)  What do you think is my latest activity, Daddy?  You will begin to believe that I am incorrigible--I am writing a book.  I started it three weeks ago and am eating it up in chunks.  I've caught the secret.  Master Jervie and that editor man were right; you are most convincing when you write about the things you know.  And this time it is about something that I do know--exhaustively.  Guess where it's laid?  In the John Grier Home!  And it's good, Daddy, I actually believe it is--just about the tiny little things that happened every day.  I'm a realist now.  I've abandoned romanticism; I shall go back to it later though, when my own adventurous future begins.
This new book is going to get itself finished--and published!  You see if it doesn't. If you just want a thing hard enough and keep on trying, you do get it in the end.  I've been trying for four years to get a letter from you--and I haven't given up hope yet.

This Is a Very Entertaning World [Marginalia

ペンギン版の『あしなあおじさん』で、p. 64, l. 6に出てくる  "This is a very entertaining world."

Sallie Holley A Life for Liberty: Anti-Slavery and Other Letters of Sallie Holley (New York: , 189  ) 190ページに次の一節があります <http://books.google.co.jp/books?id=ZvVJ7mG6iQQC&pg=PA190&lpg=PA190&dq=%22this+is+a+very+entertaining+world%22&source=bl&ots=hbZVDO7OVH&sig=8iyayPxWoweg-y-DiNhYD6jdZK8&hl=ja&ei=ue9GSseXJtOJkQX5laHvCQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1 > ――

“On the principle ‘Do the duty nearest you,” Miss Putnam thought she ought to remain here and wishes me to aid and labour with her, feeling that no work we could do elsewhere would be more important.  Anti-slavery- wise I have not been entirely idle.  I have sent $100.00 to the dear old Anti-Slavery Society from friends who know I am always agent for the cause.  In the subscription list are more than one hundred names of individual abolitionists, scattered from Maine to Michigan, upon whose kindness and hospitality we have been from time to time ‘quartered.’

“You will be pleased to know that my ‘contraband’ box arrived in Washington and gave great satisfaction.  I have another nearly ready to send. “What a great variety of scenes has human life !  As Edmund Quincy said,  This is a very entertaining world.’  The only party I have attended this winter was a ‘donation party’ at the Baptist minister's, where the chief amusement was the game of  ‘snap and catch.’  I tended a woman's baby while she played.”

** FARMERSVILLE, Sept. 12, 1863.

(3) Middy Blouse: Sailor Suits of a Hundred Years Ago (3) [Marginalia 余白に]

スティーヴンソン全集(アメリカのアザミ版) The Thistle Edition of Robert Louis Stevenson's Works [Marginalia 余白に]

Issued to subscribers only. Individual vols. were also sold separately (in bindings without the thistle motif). List of vol. titles.

そして、 "The Novels and Tales of Robert Louis Stevenson" がこの全集の呼称であることがわかりました。

Stevenson_vailima.jpg

The Works of Robert Louis Stevenson  〔「スティーヴンソン全集 Works of Robert Louis Stevenson」参照〕は、友人のSidney Colvin とCharles Baster の編集により Chatto & Windus 社から5年をかけて1898年までに28巻を刊行しました(当初全20巻の予定だったようです)。

XXIII. [Letters I] [Letters and Miscellanies of Robert Louis Stevenson]  Letters to His Family and Friends, Selected and Edited with Notes and Introduction by Sidney Colvin I  (1899)  443pp.  Rpt. 1911.

XXIV. [Letters II] [Letters and Miscellanies of Robert Louis Stevenson]  Letters to His Family and Friends, Selected and Edited with Notes and Introduction by Sidney Colvin II (1899)  465pp. incl. Index

A Pirate Song from Treasure Island [Marginalia 余白に]

Fifteen men on the dead man's chest― / Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum! / Drink and the devil had done for the rest― / Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!"

via "Yo Ho Ho And A Bottle Of Rum - Fifteen men on a dead man's chest" <http://www.sailorsongs.com/yo_ho_ho_and_a_bottle_of_rum.html>

Ayer, 1968), ch. 14, "Y. E. A. and a Bottle of Rum" (pp. 189-204) 参照〕。

"Fifteen Men (Bottle of Rum) - Original Version" (3:54) posted by "Yabier11" on June 6, 2008: "The most realistic and accurate version of this all-time pirate tune. Forget POTC.

"The song is subtitled, so you can sing it in your nights at sea!

"This is from the Roger Wagner Chorale recording of Sea Chantys. Capitol record number P3462 of 1959. Harve Presnell is the soloist. Thanks to IUFTR for the info and sorry for my big mistake.

"As you will know, the song is based on the lyrics by R.L. Stevenson's Treasure Island, one of the greatest novels ever written. I think this version captures its essence, and because of it I say it's the most realistic and accurate version (for me).

"Stevenson is one of my favourite writers. From The Master of Ballantrae and The Wrecker, his horror literature as The Body Snatcher or Markheim, to his travel books as The Silverado Squatters. I have ALL his works published in Spain! ;)

Lyrics

Verse 1.
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
The mate was fixed by the bosun's pike
The bosun brained with a marlinspike
And cookey's throat was marked belike
It had been gripped by fingers ten;
And there they lay, all good dead men
Like break o'day in a boozing ken

Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Verse 2.
Fifteen men of a whole ship's list
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Dead and be damned and the rest gone whist!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
The skipper lay with his nob in gore
Where the scullion's axe his cheek had shore
And the scullion he was stabbed times four
And there they lay, and the soggy skies
Dripped all day long in up-staring eyes
And murk sunset and at foul sunrise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Verse 3.
Fifteen men of 'em stiff and stark
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ten of the crew had the murder mark!
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Twas a cutlass swipe or an ounce of lead
Or a yawing hole in a battered head
And the scuppers' glut with a rotting red
And there they lay, aye, damn my eyes
All lookouts clapped on paradise
All souls bound just contrariwise
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Verse 4.
Fifteen men of 'em good and true
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
Ev'ry man jack could ha' sailed with Old Pew,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!
There was chest on chest full of Spanish gold
With a ton of plate in the middle hold
And the cabins riot of loot untold,
And they lay there that had took the plum
With sightless glare and their lips struck dumb
While we shared all by the rule of thumb,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum!

Verse 5.
More was seen through a sternlight screen...
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Chartings no doubt where a woman had been
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
A flimsy shift on a bunker cot
With a thin dirk slot through the bosom spot
And the lace stiff dry in a purplish blot
Oh was she wench or some shudderin' maid
That dared the knife and took the blade
By God! she was stuff for a plucky jade
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.

Verse 6.
Fifteen men on a dead man's chest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum
Drink and the devil had done for the rest
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.
We wrapped 'em all in a mains'l tight
With twice ten turns of a hawser's bight
And we heaved 'em over and out of sight,
With a Yo-Heave-Ho! and a fare-you-well
And a sudden plunge in the sullen swell
Ten fathoms deep on the road to hell,
Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum! "

The New England Primer [Marginalia 余白に]

(2) If This Book Should Chance to Roam [Daddy-Long-Legs]」で書いたように、『あしながおじさん』のなかでジャーヴィー坊ちゃんが10歳くらいのころに読んでいた本の扉に署名とともに書かれていた "If this book should ever roam,
Box its ears and
send it home."

New-EnglandPrimer.jpg

NewEnglandPrimer,rpt.jpg

New England Primer: Improved for the More Easy Attaining the True Reading of English : To Which Is Added the Assembly of Divines, and Mr. Cotton's Catechism.  1777.  Rpt. Aledo, TX: WallBuilder Press, 1991; 11th Printing, 2009.  ISBN: 978-0-925279-17-0.

In Adam's Fall/ We sinned all." みたいな、絵入りのものです〕、(2) "An Alphabet of Lessons for Youth" 〔これは、アルファベットで始まる教訓的な内容の短文のリスト――"Better is a little with the fear of the Lord, than great treasure & trouble therewith."

Our Puritan Fathers brought the Shorter Catechism with them across the ocean and laid it on the same shelf with the family Bible.  They taught it diligently to their children. [. . .]  If in this Catechism the true and the fundamental doctrines of the Gospel are expressed in fewer and better words and definitions than in any other summary, why ought we not now to train up a child in the way he should go?―why not now put him in possession of the richest treasure that ever human wisdom and industry accumulated to draw from?

あるいは、同じ年のポーの短篇「名士の群れ Lionizing」 で、鼻のでかい息子に父親が "what is the chief end of your existence" と問いを発するとき、それはShorter Catechism の第一の問い "What is the chief end of man?" のもじりであり、教理問答のほうの答え "Man's chief end is to glorify God and enjoy him forever."

Leon Czolgosz, Emma Goldman, and Anarchism in America [Marginalia 余白に]

In Case War Breaks Out Between the United States and Japan, or the President Is Assassinated , or Mr. Rockefeller Leaves a Million Dollars to the John Grier Hom [Daddy-Long-Legs]」(タイトル長ッw)で言及したウィキペディアの記事「マッキンリー大統領暗殺事件」にも書かれているように、マッキンリー大統領を1901年9月に暗殺したチョルガッシュは、無政府主義者エマ・ゴールドマンに共鳴するところがあり、5月、6月にゴールドマンと会っています。

EmmaGoldman.jpg
Emma Goldman, 1869-1940 (c. 1911)

"The Story of Emma Goldman (3/7): Feminism and Leon Czolgosz" (7:20) posted by "TommyLongstocking" on November 1, 2009: "Emma Goldman (June 27, 1869 May 14, 1940) was an anarchist known for her political activism, writing and speeches. She played a pivotal role in the development of anarchist political philosophy in North America and Europe in the first half of the twentieth century."

"The Assassination of William McKinley" (2:26) posted by "WorldsAssassinations" on November 19, 2008: "The William McKinley assassination occurred on September 6, 1901, at the Temple of Music in Buffalo, New York. United States President William McKinley, attending the Pan-American Exposition, was shot twice by Leon Czolgosz, an anarchist. McKinley initially appeared to be recovering from his wounds, but took a turn for the worse six days after the shooting and died on September 14, 1901."〔この文章は英語のWikipedia の "William McKinley assassination" の冒頭のパッセージです〕

BINGO! BINGO!

There was a farmer had a dog
And Bingo was his name-O
B-I-N-G-O!
B-I-N-G-O!
B-I-N-G-O!
And Bingo was his name-O!

The earliest known form (recorded in 1888) is as follows:[1]

A Franklyn's dogge leped over a style,
And hys name was littel Byngo.
B with a Y—Y with an N,
N with a G—G with an O,
They call'd hym littel Byngo!

Thys Franklyn, syrs, he brewed goode ayle,
And he called it Rare good Styngo!
S, T, Y, N, G, O!
He call'd it Rare goode Styngo!

Nowe is notte thys a prettie song?
I thinke it is, bye Jyngo,
J wythe a Y—N, G, O—
I sweare yt is, bye Jyngo!

English folklorist Alice Bertha Gomme recorded eight forms in 1894. Highly-differing versions were recorded in Monton, Shropshire, Liphook and Wakefield, Staffordshire, Nottinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Derbyshire and Enborne. [2]

Old MacDonald Had a Farm

There was a farmer [who] had a dog.

The Vassar College Catalogue of the Academic Year When Jean Webster Was a Freshman [Marginalia 余白に]

そして、どうやら1865-66年版にあった "Conditions of Admission" (入学資格)は1890-91年版では "Requisites for Admission" に、1897-98 年版では "Requirements for Admission to the Freshman Class" (15ページ)に、名前と変えているようです。

Alcott,Moods(1882)Preface.JPG
Alcott,Moods(1882)Preface-.JPG

2 Progenitor of Frankenstein: My Chillun, Part 2 [Marginalia 余白に]

PREFACE

WHEN "Moods" was first published, an interval of some years having then elapsed since it was written, it was so altered, to suit the taste and convenience of the publisher, that the original purpose of the story was lost sight of, and marriage appeared to be the theme instead of an attempt to show the mistakes of a moody nature, guided by impulse, not principle.  Of the former subject a girl of eighteen could know but little, of the latter most girls know a good deal; and they alone among my readers have divined the real purpose of the book in spite of its many faults, and have thanked me for it.
As the observation and experience of the woman have confirmed much that the instinct and imagination of the girl felt and tried to describe, I wish to give my first novel, with all its imperfections on its head, a place among its more successful sisters; for into it went the love, labor, and enthusiasm that no later book can possess.
Several chapters have been omitted, several of the original ones restored; and those that remain have been pruned of as much fine writing as could be done without destroying the youthful spirit of the little romance.  At eighteen death seemed the only solution for Sylvia's perplexities; but thirty years later, having learned the possibility of finding happiness after disappointment, and making love and duty go hand in hand, my heroine meets a wiser if less romantic fate than in the former edition.
Hoping that the young people will accept the amendment, and the elders will sympathize with the maternal instinct which makes unfortunate children the dearest, I reintroduce my first-born to the public which has so kindly welcomed my later off spring.

3 My Hideous Progeny: My Chillun, Part 3 [Marginalia 余白に]

(a)
The creature – "my hideous progeny" – was not given a name by Mary Shelley, and is only referred to as "The Monster", "The Creature" and "Frankenstein's Monster", or as Victor Frankenstein called his creation more commonly, "the fiend." After the release of James Whale's popular 1931 film Frankenstein, the filmgoing public immediately began speaking of the monster itself as Frankenstein. A reference to this occurs in The Bride of Frankenstein (1935) and in several subsequent films in the series, as well as in film titles such as Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein. 〔"Frankenstein - The name of the creature" <http://www.experiencefestival.com/a/Frankenstein_-_The_name_of_the_creature/id/5062662> 太字で強調付加〕

(b)

(c)
Mary Poovey, The Proper Lady and the Woman Writer: Ideology as Style in the Work of Mary Wollstonecraft, Mary Shelley, and Jane Austen. Chicago: U of Chicago P. 1984.  Ch. 4: "'My Hideous Progeny': The Lady and the Monster."

Reinforcing this emphasis on hypertext as "femininely" embodied are links that re-embody passages from Shelley's text into contexts which subtly or extravagantly alter their meaning.  A stunning example is the famous passage from the 1831 preface where Mary Shelley bids her "hideous progeny go forth and prosper" (qtd. in story/severance/hideous progeny).  "I have an affection for it, for it was the offspring of happy days, when death and grief were but words which found no true echo in my heart.  Its several pages speak of many a walk, many a drive, and many a conversation, when I was not alone; and my companion was one who, in this world, I shall never see more.  But this is for myself; my readers have nothing to do with these associations" (qtd. in story/severance/hideous progeny). In the context of Frankenstein, "hideous progeny" can be understood as referring both to the text and to the male monster.  As Anne Mellor points out, taking the text as the referent places Mary Shelley in the tradition of female writers of Gothic novels who were exposing the dark underside of British society.  When the monster is taken as the referent, the passage suggests that Mary Shelley's textual creature expresses the fear attending birth in an age of high mortality rates for women and infants--a fear that Shelley was to know intimately from wrenching personal experience.  Moreover, in Barbara Johnson's reading of Frankenstein, Shelley is also giving birth to herself as a writer in this text, so her authorship also becomes a "hideous progeny."  The rich ambiguities that inhere in the phrase make Jackson's transformation of it all the more striking.  〔Katharine Hayles, "Flickering Connectivities in Shelley Jackson's Patchwork Girl: The Importance of Media-Specific Analysis" (2000); Annabel Margaret van Baren, "Stitch and Split: Feminist Alternatives to Frankensteinian Myths in Shelley Jackson's Patchwork Girl" (2007)〕

And now, once again, I bid my hideous progeny go forth and prosper.  I have an affection for it, for it was the offspring of happy days, when death and grief were but words, which found no true echo in my heart.  Its several pages speak of many a walk, many a drive, and many a conversation, when I was not alone; and my companion was one who, in this world, I shall never see more.  But this is for myself; my readers have nothing to do with these associations.

Frankenstein (1831).jpg

Through Pencil Writing on the American Edition of Edward Knoblock's Kismet [Marginalia 余白に]

                            DIARY OF SAMUEL PEPYS.

JULY 1661

3rd.  To Westminster to Mr. Edward Montagu about business of my Lord's, and so to the Wardrobe, and there dined with my Lady, who is in some mourning for her brother, Mr. Saml.  Crew, who died yesterday of the spotted fever.  So home through Duck Lane' to inquire for some Spanish books, but found none that pleased me.  So to the office, and that being done to Sir W. Batten's with the Comptroller, where we sat late talking and disputing with Mr. Mills the parson of our parish.  This day my Lady Batten and my wife were at the burial of a daughter of Sir John Lawson's, and had rings for themselves and their husbands.  Home and to bed. <http://www.gutenberg.org/files/4131/4131-h/4131-h.htm>

Lely,Peter_EdwardMontagu.jpg
Edward Montagu (1625-72) by Peter Lely

The Diary of Samuel Pepys: Daily entries from the 17th century London diary は、いろいろな情報を盛りこんでいて、ちょっと驚倒しそうなくらい(日記へのreferences など)なのですが、Encyclopedia の People のなかの "Jemima Mountagu ("my Lady," Countess of Sandwich)" の項目は、いろんな人による書き込み (discussion) もあって、以下のような情報も得られました。

The sitter is an adolescent Samuel Crew, a member of a gentry family from Northamptonshire, who were to commission a number of family portraits from Lely during the 1650s. His parents were John Crew of Stene (1598-1670), M.P. and Speaker of the House of Commons (1623-5) and Jemima Waldegrave (1602-1675), the daughter and co-heir of Edward Waldegrave, of Lawford Hall, Essex. Little is know[n] about his life except that, as with his elder brother Nathaniel (1633-1721), Samuel chose an ecclesiastical life, becoming a reverend of the Protestant clergy.

Lot Description

Sir Peter Lely (Westphalia 1618-1680 London)
Portrait of Nathaniel, 3rd Baron Crew of Stene, later Lord Bishop of Durham, when a young man, half-length, in a slashed black doublet and a lawn collar
signed with monogram 'PL' (lower left)
oil on canvas
30 x 25 in. (76.2 x 63.5 cm.)

Generation No. 5――

  iv. の Samuel Crewe, b.

800px-Centipede_Stalk.jpg
"House centipede stalking a spider" image via Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scutigera_coleoptrata>

馬繋ぎポスト Hitching Post or Horse Post [Marginalia 余白に]

But how can one be respectful to a person who wishes to be called John Smith?  Why couldn't you have picked out a name with a little personality?  I might as well write letters to Dear Hitching-Post or Dear Clothes-Pole [イギリス版はClothes-Prop]?  (Penguin Classics 13)

To catch as with a loop, noose, or hook; to fasten, esp. in a temporary way (and against force acting in one direction). ――"Hence hitching vbl. n. (also attrib. as in hitching-bar, -clamp, -post, -strap, -weight, i.e. one used in tethering a horse); hitching ppl. a." (vbl. n.

1842 J. L. SCOTT Jrnl. Missionary Tour Pennsylvania (1843) vi. 68 When at the door they alighted, and he rode off to the ‘hitching post’.

A Dictionary of Americanisms on Historical Principles (U of Chicago P, 1951) を見てみたら、OED に載っていない連語も含めて、いろいろとアメリカ英語に入れていました。――

[この細い星印は、コトバ自体(この場合は "hitching")はアメリカ起源ではないという意味です]hitching, n. attrib.  Designating objects to which horses and mules [ラバ] may conveniently be hitched, as (1) hitching bar, (2) pole, (3) post, (4) rack, (5) rail.

(1) [1787 ATTMORE Journal 37  There was a place for horses to stand, composed of two posts set in the ground at about 15 feet distance from each other on the tops rested a cross piece with Pins at intervals for fastening the Bridles, here stood a dozen horses.]  1877  CAMPION On Frontier 128 Beyond the fire, at a similar distance from it, a 'hitching-bar was put up, to fasten horses and mules to. ― (2) 1914 BOWER Flying U Ranch 63  [They rode to the hotel, tied their horses to the long hitching pole there and went in. ― (3) 1843 J. L. SCOTT Journal 68  When at the door they alighted, and he rode off to the 'hitching post.'  1948 Newsweek 30 Aug. 19/1  No ex-governors will put a halter or bridle on me and lead me to a hitching post. ― (4) 1904 HARBEN Georgians 146  Eric rode up to a hitching-rack and dismounted.  1947 CHALFANT Gold, Guns, & Ghost Towns 69  There [he] saw tied to a hitching rack a horse to which he took a fancy, so he mounted it and rode off.
   (5) 1920 J. GREGORY Man to Man 103  A dozen saddle-horses were tied at the hitching-rail.  1948 Sat. Ev. Post 21 Aug. 99/2  An hour later, he leaned on the hitching rail at the post office and wished he could simply die and have it over with.

HitchingPost,DictionaryofAmericanisms(1951).jpg

(1627) A Sea Grammar by John Smith (1627) [Marginalia 余白に]

SeaGrammar,A(1627)byJohnSmith.,jpg.jpg

An Accidence, or the Pathway to Experience Necessary for all Young Seamen (1626) ――

Smith, John: An Accidence, or The path-way to experience. Necessary for all young sea-men, or those that are desirous to goe to sea, briefly shewing the phrases, offices, and words of command, belonging to the building, ridging, and sayling, a man of warre; and how to manage a fight at Sea. Together with the charge and duty of every officer, and their shares: also the names, vveight, charge, shot, and powder, of all sorts of great ordnance. With the vse of the petty tally.
Printed by N. Okes for Ionas Man and Benjamin Fisher, London, 1626 (1st). 8vo, 13,5×7,5 cm, 38 pp.
RCA records (8), 42 pp & Roberts records 4to, iv, 42 pp. Other editions 1627 (2nd) and 1636 and enlarged in A Sea Grammar in 1627, 1653, 1691, 1692, 1699 and 1705. Reprinted 1884, 1895, 1907 and 1910 in The Complete Works of John Smith. JCB has a copy with a variant dedication to Sir Robert Heath on A2r.
〔"17th Century Maritime and Naval Dictionaries" <http://www.bruzelius.info/Nautica/Bibliography/Dictionaries_1600.html>〕

Smith, John: A Sea Grammar, with the Plaine Exposition of Smiths Accidence for young Sea-men, enlarged. Diuided into fifteene Chapters: what they are you may partly conceiue by the Contents. Written by Captaine Iohn Smith, sometimes Gouernour of Virginia, and Admirall of Nevv-England.
Iohn Haviland, London, 1627. 8vo, 16,5×10,5 cm, (12), 76 pp. Pagination irregular 55=54, 54=55, 70 unnumbered, 83-86=73-76.
Facsimile: Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, Amsterdam, 1968.
Michael Joseph, London, 1970. 8vo, xxxii, 113 pp, 10 plates. Edited by Kermit Goell.
A second and expanded edition of An Accidence, or path-way to experience, first published in 1626.

The Oxford Companion to American Literature ――

His books are A True Relation of such occurrences and accidents of noate as hath hapned in Virginia since the first planting of that Collony (1608), a pamphlet giving the earliest firsthand account of the settlement, but not mentioning his rescue by Pocahontas; A Map of Virginia with a Description of the Country (1612), continuing the account of his governorship; A Description of New England: or the Observations and Discoveries of Captain John Smith … (1616), a narrative of his later ventures in New England and unsuccessful voyages while in the employ of Gorges; New Englands Trials (1620), a pamphlet that has been called “essentially a plea for employment,” and which was enlarged (1622) to give an account of the successes of the Pilgrims; The Generall Historie of Virginia, New England, and the Summer Isles (1624), a lengthy and more magniloquent reworking of his earlier writings, containing an extended account of the Pocahontas story; An Accidence, or The Pathway to Experience Necessary for all Young Seamen (1626), a pamphlet that was recast, probably by another hand, as A Sea Grammar (1627) and The Seaman's Grammar (1692); The True Travels, Adventures, and Observations of Captaine John Smith in Europe, Asia, Africa, and America, from …1593 to 1629 … (1630), the autobiography that furnishes information about his early life; and Advertisements for the Unexperienced Planters of New England, or Anywhere; or, The Pathway to Erect a Plantation (1631), which, in the manner of a wise scholar counseling a young pupil, addresses advice to Winthrop and his Massachusetts settlers, and contains Smith's pathetic autobiographical poem The Sea‐Mark.

1626年の Accidence の、もしかすると別の人の手で ("probably by another hand") 書き直された ("recast") ものとして 1627 年の A Sea Grammar と 1692 年の The Seaman's Grammar を並べています。

    A Sea Grammar

The Sea-mans Dictionary: Or, An Exposition and Demonstration of all the Parts and Things belonging to a Shippe: Together with an Explanation of all the Termes and Phrases used in the Practique of Navigation.  Composed by that able and experienced Sea-man Sr Henry Manwayring, Knight . . . The Sea-Mans Grammar and Dictionary

Chap. XV.  How they divide their shares in a man of Warre; what Bookes and Instruments are fit for a Sea man, with divers advertisements for young Gentlemen that intend to follow the Sea, and the use of petty Tally.  296

ま、17世紀間それほど変わったとも思われませんけれど、Dockes = docks とか principall = principal とか metall = metal とか、 Beame = beam とか、Sailes = sails とか、 tearmes = terms とか、inlarged = enlarged とか、今の英語と綴りが違いますし、大文字の使用も今の習慣と違います。
