ジュディーの年齢 (3) Judy's Age

ジュディー・アボットの年齢については、「ジュディーの年齢 (2) Judy's Age」でいちおう暫定的な解決を見た気になって、頭はすっかり別の話題に移りかけていたのですけれど、たまたま「スティーヴンソンからテニソンへ　From Stevenson to Tennyson」に続く「スティーヴンソンの最初の言及　The First Mention of R. L. S.」で引用した中に、1年生の12月の時点で（ということは11月の誕生日を迎えた後です）「18年というブランクを埋めるために〔空白の18年間を背負っているので 〕because there are eighteen blank years behind me」、フツウの女の子たちに追いつくべく必死に本を読んでいる、という記述があって、あらためて気になりました。

　　自分の推測だと、1年生の11月初めの誕生日で19歳になったはずなので。「ジェルーシャは、17年間の人生で、一度もふつうの家に足を踏み入れたことがなかった in all her seventeen years, had never stepped inside an ordinary house　(p. 6)」という冒頭の枠物語「ブルーな水曜日 "Blue Wednesday"」の記述と同じくヘンな感じ。当初17歳の終わりに大学入学というプランを作家は思い描いていたのでしょうか？　ジュディーのモデルとなったアデレイド・クレプシーは記事「レイディー・ジェイン・グレイ・スクール Lady Jane Grey School」で書いたように、1878年9月9日生まれ。小学校に一年早く入学させることも満6歳になってから入学することもありうる日付ではないでしょうか。・・・・・・

　　それで、今回、ちゃんと作品テキストに検索をかけてすべて確認しました。

seventeen から twenty, twenty-one まで。そしてジュディーの年齢については、17歳というのは冒頭の一箇所だけ、21歳というのは3年生11月9日の手紙の一回だけ。そして前に引用したリペット院長が、14歳で学校をおえて村の高校に入ってふつうは16歳までのところを2年間余分にいるとジュディーに語る箇所。前は「とりあえず、現時点では以上3箇所の情報があります」と書きましたが、検索で確認すると、それら以外はすべて18年という年についてであり、それは生まれてから孤児院で育てられた18年間をもっぱら言うのでした。だから、あくまで入学前の、夏までの歳月なのでした。

(1)  My room is on the north-west corner with two windows and a view.  After you've lived in a ward for eighteen years with twenty room-mates, it is restful to be alone.  This is the first chance I've ever had to get acquainted with Jerusha Abbott.  I think I'm going to like her.

(2)  What do you think, Daddy?  The English instructor said that my last paper shows an unusual amount of originality.  She did, truly.  Those were her words.  It doesn't seem possible, does it, considering the eighteen years of training that I've had?  The aim of the John Grier Home (as you doubtless know and heartily approve of) is to turn the ninety-seven orphans into ninety-seven twins.

(3)  I have a new unbreakable rule:  never, never to study at night no matter how many written reviews are coming in the morning.  Instead, I read just plain books--I have to, you know, because there are eighteen blank years behind me.  You wouldn't believe, Daddy, what an abyss of ignorance my mind is; I am just realizing the depths myself.  The things that most girls with a properly assorted family and a home and friends and a library know by absorption, I have never heard of.

(4)  She's [Julia Pendleton is] getting quite interested in me, because I say such funny things.  I try hard not to, but they do pop out when I'm surprised--and I'm surprised most of the time.  It's a dizzying experience, Daddy, to pass eighteen years in the John Grier Home, and then suddenly to be plunged into the WORLD.

(5)  Don't be outraged, Daddy.  I am not intimating that the John Grier Home was like the Lowood Institute.  We had plenty to eat and plenty to wear, sufficient water to wash in, and a furnace in the cellar.  But there was one deadly likeness.  Our lives were absolutely monotonous and uneventful.  Nothing nice ever happened, except ice-cream on Sundays, and even that was regular.  In all the eighteen years I was there I only had one adventure--when the woodshed burned.  We had to get up in the night and dress so as to be ready in case the house should catch.  But it didn't catch and we went back to bed.

    ということで、むしろ18歳まで孤児院にいたことを傍証する記述なのでした。(1) と (2) は翌月に19歳になるところ、(3) は前の月に19歳になったところ、(4) と (5) は19歳です。(3) の空白の18年というのも、あくまでも大学入学前の孤児院での歳月です。
