フランセス・ホジソン・バーネットの自伝 The One I Knew the Best of All: A Memory of the Mind of a Child

『小公子 Little Lord Fauntleroy』 (1886) で一世風靡セピアとまではいわずとも19世紀末の男子ファッション界を席巻したバーネットですが、その数年後の1893年に自伝を執筆しています。『小公子』以前の彼女の作品は、Surly Tim and Other Stories (1877)、Haworth's (1879)、Louisiana (1880)、Through One Administration (1883) など、基本的には子供向けではなくて大人向けのものでしたが、その後Sara Crew; or What Happened at Miss Minchin's (1888)や、 Editha's Burglar: A Story for Children (1888)、Giovanni and the Other: Children Who Have Made Stories (1892) など、副題が子供向けのものであることを示すような本へのシフトを示しつつ、A Woman's Will or Miss Defarge (1887)やThe Pretty Sister of José (1889)など大人読者向けと考えられる作品も書いていくことになります。

　　Gretchen Holbrook Gerzina が編集した Norton Critical Edition (2006) や同じノートン社から同じ編者が出した The Annnotated Secret Garden (2007) の年譜 (chronology) になぜ、この本の記載がないのかわけわかめなのですけれど、確かに出版されています。

    この本は次男のヴィヴィアン Vivian Burnett （長男のライオネル Lionel は1890年12月に16歳で病死）の書いた The Romantick Lady: The Life Story of an Imagination (1927) と並んで、Angelica Shirley Carpenter と Jean Shirley の書いた伝記 Frances Hodgson Burnett: Beyond the Secret Garden (1990) のソースとなっている本です。

偶然にも先日、図書館で同タイトルの本を借り、昨日から電車の中で読んでおりました。ただ、私が借りたのは、London: Frederick Warne& Co. Facsimile edition で、タイトルの副題 A Memory of the Mind of a Child がないのです・・・。こういう場合、参考文献に記すとき、迷います。

パピロさま　あー、それは自分が使用したテクスト（エディション）の情報を書けばいいだけのことです。気になるようだったらスクエア・ブラケット [ ] に補足的に情報を足しておけばよい。
　　・・・・・・Facsimile edition という記述がよくわからんけど。

ちなみに、 Bixler の Frances Hodgson Burnett (Twayne) の Selected Bibliography には、 Facsimile of 1893 Warne edition. という書き方がされていますが、MLA式じゃなさそうなので、参考になりません；；
