デビルダウンヘッド (3) Devil Down-Head

「デビルダウンヘッド (1) 　Devil Down-Head　[Daddy-Long-Legs]」と「デビルダウンヘッド (2) Devil Down-Head」と「天使と悪魔、天(国)と地(獄)　Angels and Devils, Heaven (, Earth,) and Hell」、あと、「オフィーリアと柳　Ophelia and the Willow Tree」のからみです。

　　今日ひさしぶりに都心の仕事場に行きました。外濠の桜並木は落ち葉を掃除する人が出ていて、でもきれいになった道に一匹太ったアメリカシロヒトリが横たわっていたりして、季節を感じました。

　　で、書き留めたはずがどこかへ消えてしまった、Dictionary of American Regional English, vol.2 の "devil-downhead" の記述を書き留めておきます――

[From their habit of going headfirst down a tree trunk]〔「頭を下にして木の幹を降りる習性から」――ブラケッツ[ ] に語源的説明がくるのはOED 以来の伝統〕   Cf devil-downhill 〔これは次の見出し語ですが、devil downhead と同様に = a nuthatch〕

　　ということで、1912年の『あしながおじさん』の2年生8月10日に出てくる "two little 'devil down-heads' darting up and down the trunk" は、この新しいアメリカ方言辞典の初出に先んじています。問題は1と2に分けてあって、1の胸白か、2の胸赤かわからんということかもしれませんが。だからといって（それを理由として）、辞書に記載されないというのもわけわかめ。コトバとモノとの対応という問題ですけれど。
