彷徨の渇望 Wanderthirst [Daddy-Long-Legs]
まちがえて wanderthurst と二度にわたって書いてしまった、wanderthirstについて。
三度、2年生8月10日の手紙の一部を引用します。
During our week of rain I sat up in the attic and had an orgie of reading―Stevenson, mostly. He himself is more entertaining than any of the characters in his books; I dare say he made himself into the kind of hero that would look well in print. Don't you think it was perfect of him to spend all the ten thousand dollars his father left, for a yacht, and go sailing off to the South Seas? He lived up to his adventurous creed. If my father had left me ten thousand dollars, I'd do it, too. The thought of Vailima makes me wild. I want to see the tropics. I want to see the whole world. I am going to some day―I am, realy, Daddy, when I get to be a great author, or artist, or actress, or playwright―or whatever sort of a great person I turn out to be. I have a terrible wanderthirst; the very sight of a map makes me want to put on my hat and take an umbrella and start. "I shall see before I die the palms and temples of the South." (p. 77)

最後の引用はテニソンの詩からのものだということはもう、しつこく言わずともいいと思いますｗ。
wanderthirst は英和辞典に出ておらないばかりでなく、オックスフォード英語大辞典(OED) にも載っていないコトバです。wander + thirst だから、意味は了解できるし、そういう意味では、必ずしも辞書を引かなくてもよいコトバかもしれません。でも辞書・事典はコトバの意味だけでなく、歴史や背景や肌合やらを教えてくれるのだし、辞書に載っていないというのが気になる人種もいます。自分もまあいちおうそういう人間の部類です（うそかも）。
とりあえずOED に見出し語として挙がっているのは、wanderlust という語です。 "An eager desire or fondness for wandering or travelling." 〔彷徨や旅行への熱い欲求ないし嗜好〕という簡潔な定義があって、1902年に始まる用例が引かれています。
あと、見出し語にはなっていませんが、動詞 wander の7番の複合語に、"Comb., as wander-bird = Wandervogel; wander-plug, a plug which can be fitted into any of a number of sockets in a dry battery; wander-spirit = wanderlust; wander-witted = wandery (cf. wandrynge-wytted s.v. wandering ppl. a. 2b)." と記述がある中に、wander-spirit = wanderlust として、 "wander-spirit" というコトバが同義語として挙がっています。
WEB で wanderthirst を検索していちばん多く引っかかるのは、"Beyond the East the sun rise, beyond the West the sea, /And East and West the wanderthirst that will not let me be" というふうに始まる、Gerald Gould という人の詩で、2007年に書かれたらしいページによると、それまでインターネットに見つからなかったので書き留めるみたいに書かれていますけれど、いまはやたら載っています。この詩を添えた絵もあったり（Dorothy Venter）。もしかするとシート・ミュージックとして昔にあったのかなあとか。
でも、この詩はwanderthirst ではなくて wanderlust だとするサイトもあったりもします――"The Home Book of Verse, Volume 3 by Burton Egbert Stevenson"。あとセカイモンに出ている絵でもタイトルは "Wanderlust" になっていたりします。
よくわからんのですが、ともかくこのイギリスのGerald Gould さん (1885-1936) は・・・・・・あー、Wikipediaを読むと、 "Wander-thirst" という詩はしばしば引用される、と書かれております。あ、ウィキペディアに発表年が書かれておらず、他のサイトの情報で1930年代と誤解していたのですが、1906年のようです――"Wander-thirst (Gould, set by A. Baynon, H. Davies, G. Peel, L. Ronald)" (The Lied and Art Song Texts Page)。20歳ごろの若書きの詩集だったのですね。タイトルは "Wander-thirst" だけれど、詩の本文では "wanderlust" なのですね。1906年刊行の Lyrics 所収。このページは、歌謡になったものの情報も書かれているようです。
