This Is a Very Entertaning World

ペンギン版の『あしなあおじさん』で、p. 64, l. 6に出てくる  "This is a very entertaining world." という一文。

      “On the principle ‘Do the duty nearest you,” Miss Putnam thought she ought to remain here and wishes me to aid and labour with her, feeling that no work we could do elsewhere would be more important.  Anti-slavery- wise I have not been entirely idle.  I have sent $100.00 to the dear old Anti-Slavery Society from friends who know I am always agent for the cause.  In the subscription list are more than one hundred names of individual abolitionists, scattered from Maine to Michigan, upon whose kindness and hospitality we have been from time to time ‘quartered.’
     “You will be pleased to know that my ‘contraband’ box arrived in Washington and gave great satisfaction.  I have another nearly ready to send. “What a great variety of scenes has human life !  As Edmund Quincy said,  ‘This is a very entertaining world.’  The only party I have attended this winter was a ‘donation party’ at the Baptist minister's, where the chief amusement was the game of  ‘snap and catch.’  I tended a woman's baby while she played.”

　　こういうのって引用なんだかなんなんだかわかりません。それでも、どうやらジーン・ウェブスターという人は、引用符なしの引用とか、あんがいやっているみたいですし、大叔父さんのマーク・トウェインへの意識は別としても、第一に、イギリス的ノヴェル成立以来の「書簡体」小説の伝統と、第二に、社会の除け者的な存在（別に悪い人でなくても「ピカロ（悪党）」的な位置づけを、社旗規範を守る人たちからは烙印される）が社会でそれなりの智慧を得て成長していく「ピカレスク・ロマン」的な伝統と、第三にドイツ語でビルドゥングス・ロマン（教養小説・発展小説）と呼ばれた、人間の成長を描く小説（でもコレ自体、マナーよりもキャラクター描写に力点を置いた場合の英国小説の特質なわけでしょうが）、第四に、若者が作家として成長してゆく「芸術家小説」的な伝統（これは第二・第三に連結するところありなのでしょうけれど）、それから19世紀から児童文学や宗教文学と切り結びながら発達してきたらしい女性小説など、いろいろな「小説」のフォーミュラやら形式やら構成やらを学んだうえでつくられたものだと思われ、いきおい、引用は複雑な様相を呈するのかもしれない、なあ、とも想像したりします。それにしてもよくわからず、タダのメモです。
