ガス・ハウス Gas House [Daddy-Long-Legs]
4年生になって2通目の、11月17日の手紙に、ガス供給施設に原稿を燃やしに行くシーンが出てきます。
17th November
Dear Daddy-Long-Legs,
Such a blight has fallen over my literary career. I don't know whether to tell you or not, but I would like some sympathy--silent sympathy, please; don't re-open the wound by referring to it in your next letter.
I've been writing a book, all last winter in the evenings, and all the summer when I wasn't teaching Latin to my two stupid children. I just finished it before college opened and sent it to a publisher. He kept it two months, and I was certain he was going to take it; but yesterday morning an express parcel came (thirty cents due) and there it was back again with a letter from the publisher, a very nice, fatherly letter--but frank! He said he saw from the address that I was still at college, and if I would accept some advice, he would suggest that I put all of my energy into my lessons and wait until I graduated before beginning to write. He enclosed his reader's opinion. Here it is:
'Plot highly improbable. Characterization exaggerated. Conversation unnatural. A good deal of humour but not always in the best of taste. Tell her to keep on trying, and in time she may produce a real book.'
Not on the whole flattering, is it, Daddy? And I thought I was making a notable addition to American literature. I did truly. I was planning to surprise you by writing a great novel before I graduated. I collected the material for it while I was at Julia's last Christmas. But I dare say the editor is right. Probably two weeks was not enough in which to observe the manners and customs of a great city.
I took it walking with me yesterday afternoon, and when I came to the gas house, I went in and asked the engineer if I might borrow his furnace. He politely opened the door, and with my own hands I chucked it in. I felt as though I had cremated my only child!

本一冊書いていました。去年の冬のあいだは毎晩ずっと、夏のあいだはおバカな子供たちにラテン語を教えない時間に、ずっと。ちょうど大学が始まる前に書き終えて、ある出版社に送りました。二ヶ月返事がなかったので、採用されるのだと確信しました。が、昨日の朝、速達の小包（30セント着払い）が届いて、出版社からの手紙が添えられて、わたしの原稿が戻されました。とても几帳面な、父親らしい手紙で――でも率直！ 住所からわたしがまだ大学生だとわかったこと、そして、もしも助言を受け入れる気持ちがあるなら、いいたいのは課業に専念して卒業してから書き始めたらよいということだ、と書いてありました。それから、査読者の意見が同封されていました。こうです――
「プロットは蓋然性がはなはだ低い。人物描写は誇張が過ぎる。会話は不自然。ユーモアはふんだんだが必ずしも趣味が最上ではない。努力を続ければ、やがて本物の本を生み出せるようになるかもしれないと伝えてほしい。」
全体としては全然お世辞にもなってないですよねｗ。それなのにわたしは自分がアメリカ文学に顕著な貢献をするのだと思っていたのです、ほんとに。卒業前に偉大な小説を書いてあなたを驚かせる計画だったのです。去年のクリスマスにジュリアのところにいるあいだに題材を集めたのです。でも、編集者は正しいと言わねばなりません。たぶん二週間というのは、大都市の風俗習慣を観察するには十分ではなかった。
昨日の午後、それをもって散歩に出かけました。ガス・ハウスを通りかかったとき、中に入って、係の人にボイラーの火を貸してもらえるかお願いしました。親切にも炉の扉を開けてくれ、私は我が手で投げ込みました。まるで自分の子供を火葬にしたような気持ちだった！）
この箇所では、"gas house" と呼ばれています。またヴァッサー女子大にひきつけて調べると、1865年、Main Building の完成と同時期の記述として、"At a distance of 400 feet from the Main Building was the Boiler and Gas House which furnished all buildings on campus with both heat and light, Vassar College being the first institution in the world to be heated by a central plant in a separate building[s]."(Vassar Life) 〔メイン・ビルディングから400フィートの距離にボイラー・アンド・ガス・ハウスがあって、キャンパス内のすべての建物に熱と光を供給した。ヴァッサー大学は、離れた建物内のセントラル・プラントによって暖房を行なう、世界で初めての施設だった。〕と書かれていますし、大学が開学してまもなく書かれた1867年の本でも "Boiler and Gas House" は "Gas and Boiler House" という呼称で書かれています（下の図のD）。――

Aは "College" と書かれていますけれど、これが "Main Building" です。このころはまだ4つの学生寮の建物は影も形もないのでした。それでも「全寮制」として大学は1865年9月26日に開学しています。最初の年の学生数353、学費（居住費込み）は350ドル。教職員30人（うち女性22人）。

英語辞典的には、 "gas plant" は、植物で「ヨウシュハクセン」(=fraxinella) というのをおいておくと、「ガス工場」(gasworks) とあります。gasworks とは、ガス製造所、ガス工場です。"gas house" は、アメリカの俗語で「酒場、バー、ビアホール」みたいな意味をおいておくと、やっぱり gasworks です。ヴァッサーのキャンパスに初めからあった施設は、石炭を燃焼させて照明用のガスをつくると同時に、暖房用の蒸気を送る役割ももっていたので、gas and boiler house か boiler and gas house という名称が正式だったのだろうと思われます。
