ワードニックとワードテック Wordnik and Wordtheque

「女性作家の言祝ぎ　A Celebration of Women Writers」で書いた、A Celebration of Women Writers の編集者であるペンシルヴェニア大学のメアリー・マーク・オッカーブルームさんは、Wordnik という辞書もこしらえていて、このあいだからときどき使っています。複数の辞書の定義が並んで、長めの用例文章がリンク付き（ない場合もある）で示されます。

　　たとえば tin kitchen を引くと、つぎのページがあらわれます。――

　　"tin kitchen - definition and meaning from Wordnik" <http://www.wordnik.com/words/tin%20kitchen>

　　でも Definitions については "No definitions are available for tin kitchen." と表示されています。辞書には見つからないと。まあね。つーか、OED の用例にはあったわけですけれど、さすがにそんなところまではカヴァーしておらない（あ、記事書きそびれていました。書かねば・・・・・・とりあえず昔の記事）。

　　でも便利なのは用例です。最初のページには3つ挙がっているだけですけど、Examples のラインの View all  をクリックすると、11例並んででてきます（all といっても全部出るわけでなくて最大11で、残り5個あり）。<http://www.wordnik.com/words/tin%20kitchen/examples>  『若草物語』から3つ入っていて、第二部でも出てくるのだとわかりました。コールドウェルの『タバコロード』の "toss out the twisted tin kitchen dishes and china doorknobs" は、なんかモノが違いますね。

　　あと、検索結果のデフォールトが Definitions ですけど、横に "Thesaurus  ·  Examples  ·  Pronunciations  ·  Comments  ·  translate to: [select language]" と並んでいて、コメント欄は用例や注釈を呼びかけているので、参加型のところもあるらしい。

　　えーと、定義がある単語をためしてみます。daddy-long-legs で引くと――

　　"daddy-long-legs - definition and meaning from Wordnik" <http://www.wordnik.com/words/daddy-long-legs>

　　"–noun   1. common misspelling of daddy longlegs." あ゛、"daddy longlegs" が正しくて、"daddy-long-legs" は「よくあるつづり間違い（ミススペリング）」だったのね。でもこのスペリングでの用例は挙がっています。

　　"daddy longlegs" で引くと、ちゃんと辞書の記述を見ることができました。

　　あとflickr の画像も並びます。

　　しかし・・・・・・かんじんのジーン・ウェブスターの『あしながおじさん』はどこに?　ふと思いついて "Daddy-Long-Legs" で検索したら、用例に出てきました、出てきました。<http://www.wordnik.com/words/Daddy-Long-Legs/examples>

   つまりハイフンの有無、大文字小文字などに sensitive なのですね。これはこれで使いようによっては便利かもしれない。

　　Wordtheque というのは前世紀からあるサイトで、Logos という multilingual な企画のひとつです。Logos のほうは "The Dictionary" が別になっているので、もっぱら用例をコーパスから検索するのが Wordtheque の用途かしら。以前よく使っていたのですが、でも以前からどこにあるのかよくわからなかったのですが（ｗ）、"Logos Library" というのがサイト名だったようです。

    説明――"Welcome to the Logos context search facility LOGOS LIBRARY. The LOGOS LIBRARY is a powerful interface with a massive database (currently 707.737.941 words) containing multilingual novels, technical literature and translated texts. Hits are highlighted in context windows that can be expanded up or down. To go to the source web pages (novels, etc.) click on the title - to run a dictionary search click on the highlighted word or phrase."

　　検索は "word" となってるけれど、3語の並びまで入れられます。"daddy longlegs" "daddy-long-legs" "daddy-longlegs" など試してみると意外にというか悲しいくらいに少ない（ないし零）なのだけれど、ハイフンにsensitive でないことは確認されました。 "tin kitchen" はいくつも出てきます。昔は検索結果のURL が出てきたのに、いまはダメみたいなので、絵で貼ります。――

　　5例しかないです。 Good Wives というのは『若草物語』の第二部の最初のタイトルです。

 　 文脈をくわしく読みたいときにダイレクトにパッセージにリンクしているので便利かもしれない。Wordnik のほうはそうではないので。

　　よくいえばどちらも出前一長一短。しかし Wordnik のほうが伸びそうな気配がします。Wordtheque はなんかあんまり進化していないような。もっとコーパス増やせばいいのに。
