Kipling の当該短篇の注解 "'Black Jack': Notes on the Text" <http://www.kipling.org.uk/rg_blackjack_notes_p.htm> をネット上に出しているのは John McGivering という人なのですけれど（copyright John McGivering and Gillian Sheehan 2005 All rights reserved ）、それはイギリスのキプリング協会 The Kipling Society のホームページ <http://www.kipling.org.uk> 内にある、ちゃんとしたもののようです。でもモーリちゃんの父には、その英語と論理はなんだかユルイものに思えます（人のことは言えんがなｗ）。
[Page 94, line 11] ‘Wot’s the odds so long as you’re ‘appy ? a catch-phrase that appears in “Trilby” (1894) by George du Maurier (1834-1896) artist and novelist. It must, however, have originated earlier as Kipling is writing in 1888. It is also quoted in “In Ambush” (Stalky & Co page 18, line 1) where - in this Guide - our Editor, Isabel Quigly, notes the apparent anachronism of a quotation from a play of 1894 appearing in a story set in the period 1878-1882.
ジョージ・デュ＝モーリアの1894年の『トリルビー』に現われるキャッチフレーズだけれど、元はもっと前のものに違いない、だってキプリングは1888年に書いているから、と書かれています。それからキプリングの Stalky & Co の18ページにも出てくるけれど、ここの編者のイザベルさんが注釈しているように1878年から1882年が時代設定の話に1894年の芝居からの引用が現われるというアナクロニズムが起こっていると（よくわかりませんがHP内を探すと出てくるコメントなのでしょう）。このStalky & Co というのはキプリングが1899 年にロンドンのマクミランから刊行した短篇集ですが、その18ページの1－2行につぎのようなことばが会話中にあります。―― "But what's the odds, as long as you're 'appy?"
それから、キプリングが1888年に書いている――"as Kipling is writing in 1888" という英語はオッケーなんすかね、まあ、この作品をもっぱら扱っている文脈では現在時制で可なのでしょうか――というのは、E. W. Martindell という人の編集した A Bibliography of the Works of Rudyard Kipling, 1881-1923 （どうやら私家版 pbk. Martindell, 2007） という文献学的な資料を調べてみると、1888年にインドの「パイオニア・プレス」という出版社（印刷屋?）から Terence Mulvaney ら3人の兵卒を主人公とした Soliders Three: A Collection of Stories という短篇集をキプリングは出しており、7篇中6篇はその年の1月から7月に The Week's News という週刊誌に発表されたもの、そして "Black Jack" のみが未発表の短篇であったようです(p. 344)。なるほど。
しかし、もともとモーリちゃんの関心は、ジーン・ウェブスターの "Wot's the hodds so long as you're 'appy? (That's a quotation. I've been reading the English classics.) 〔・・・・・・いいじゃないの幸せならば? （これは引用です。英文学の古典をこのところ読んでいるのです。）" という記述に見合うものはどれか、という一点にあります（むろんウェブスターが引用を「改変」するという可能性を認めつつ）。
で、結論的には、デュ＝モーリアでもキプリングでもなくて、次の作品をジュディーは読んでいたのだと思います。――
“In earnest! Of course I am. Pretty engineers you are. Sawed its own bed in two, or burst itself. Don’t know which, and what’s more I don’t care. Come, Martha, my bantam chicken, let’s have a cup of tea. Bother that stick, it can’t keep its legs much better than myself. How are you, mother? Glorious weather, isn’t it?”
Mr. Merryboy ignored deafness. He continued to speak to his mother just as though she heard him.
And she continued to nod and smile, and make-believe to hear with more demonstration of face and cap than ever. After all, her total loss of hearing made little difference, her sentiments being what Bobby Frog in his early days would have described in the words, “Wot’s the hodds so long as you’re ’appy?”

そして、このバランタイン Robert Michael Ballantyne, 1825-94 （児童文学史の本では必ず出てくる名前だと思います、代表作はたぶん The Dog Crusoe and His Master (1861)――シートン動物記を訳した白木茂などの訳により『名犬クルーソー』として日本では読まれてきました、むかし）の本は、初版が1884年に出ているのでした（R. M. Ballantyne, Dusty Diamonds Cut and Polished: A Tale of City-Arab Life and Adventure [London: James Nisbet, 1884]）。

はい、おひさしぶりです。4月11日に帰国して3ヶ月になります。あれこれ忙しかったのもありますが、どうブログを整えようか（整わないことは承知の上で）という問題に悩んで日が矢のように過ぎました。あっちもなんかどうしようか考えがまとまらないのでコメントの返事も書かないままでいますｗ。とりあえずこっちで細々といくらか書いてから告知をしようかと思っています（なかばバレバレですが）。日本はやっぱり暑いですねー。皆様ご自愛ください。
