　　ジュディーが、こんな讃美歌を選ぶ人の心理を知りたいと書いた、ケロッグ牧師の説教後の讃美歌として引用されているのは、次の4行でした。――

Come, leave your sports and earthly toys
And join me in celestial joys.
Or else, dear friend, a long farewell.
I leave you now to sink to hell.
（さあ、地上の遊びも戯れも捨てて
我とともに天上の喜びに加われ
さなくば、友よ、永の別れ

　　このまま検索かけてもダメ（あしながおじさんに戻るだけ）なのですけれど、適当なカンで、適当にコトバを選んで検索した結果、つぎのようなものが見つかったのでした。

    この歌は「罪人」に「回心」（改心）を訴えるもので、青年たち（男女）に選択を迫ります。永遠の祝福を得られるとか、罪と苦痛から免れるとか言われれば、回心するのがよいようにしか思われませんが、そのためには地上的な娯楽物を捨てねばなりません。

　　（もしもこの讃美歌がモトになっているとして――基本的に5番の前2行と7番の前2行を合わせているように見えるわけですが――、）ジーン・ウェブスターの、改新とはいえずとも改変ないし改編したヴァージョンでは、地上の楽しみを捨てて天上の喜びに私と一緒に参入しないのなら、さようなら、私はあなたが地獄に沈むままに残していきます、という、なかなか直截な歌詞になっています（主旨は9番まである讃美歌と同じなのですけれど）。

　　調子に乗って、5～7番を注解&訳してみます。

  5.Your sports, and all your glittering toys,/ Compared with our celestial joys,/ Like momentary dreams appear:--/Come, go with us--your souls are dear.
上の2行は、普通の語順にすると、Your sports(,) and all your glittering toys appear like momentary dreams, compared with our celestial joys. （おまえの楽しみやまばゆい玩具は、天上の喜びに比べると、つかの間の夢と見える。さあ、私たちと来なさい――魂は大切なものだ。）

  6.Young women, now we look to you,/ Are you resolved to perish too?/ To rush in carnal pleasures on,/ And sink in flaming ruin down?
（若い女たちよ、こんどはおまえたちだ。やはり堕落するつもりなのか？　肉の快楽にひたり続け、燃えさかる破滅に沈んでいくつもりなのか？）

  7.Then, dear young friends, a long farewell,/ We're bound to heaven, but you to hell./ Still God may hear us, while we pray,/ And change you ere that burning day.
（ならば、親愛なる若者たちよ、永の別れだ。私たちは天国へ向かう。しかしおまえたちは地獄行きだ。それでもなお、神が私たちの祈るあいだ私たちの願いを聞き、業火の日の前におまえたちを変えたまわんことを。）

　　『あしながおじさん』のヴァージョンは、違う連だけれども元の（かどうか断定はできませんけれど）と同じ単語 "toys" と "joys"（5連） 、そして "farewell" と "hell" （7連）で同じ韻を踏んで、aabb という同じ押韻のかたちに整えています。
