多弁にて失礼 Loquaciously Yours

入学してまもなくの10月25日の手紙のむつかしげな結語は、ラテン語の勉強を反映しているのだと思っていました。

You only wanted to hear from me once a month, didn't you?  And I've been peppering you with letters every few days!  But I've been so excited about all these new adventures that I must talk to somebody; and you're the only one I know.  Please excuse my exuberance; I'll settle pretty soon.  If my letters bore you, you can always toss them into the waste-basket.  I promise not to write another till the middle of November.

　　loquaciously は eloquence （雄弁、能弁）と同じく、ラテン語の loquor （英語のspeak）を語根とする「学識語 learned word」ですが、eloquence よりもポピュラーではない、むつかしい言葉です。ジュディーは前後の手紙でラテン語の勉強についても言及しており（実は学年末の試験で幾何学とラテン語を落第して再試を受けることになるのですけれど）、ラテン語を勉強しているんですよーということをなにげに訴えているのかなあ、と思っておりました。

　　WEB上のあまたある辞典に、プリンストン大学のデータベース WordNet を利用した Lexicus  (Lexic.us) というサイトがあります。なるたけ簡潔な定義を挙げたうえで、類語や関連リンクを並べた、ちょっとスマートな辞典です。Lexic.us で loquaciously を引くと、"Literary usage of loquaciously" という見出しがあって、5つ文学作品における用例が挙がっています。――

　　冒頭に挙がっているのは『あしながおじさん』でした。それより古いのは3番です（そしてこのふたつ以外は、手紙ではない、ふつうの文章での使用です）。この1874年と書かれている文章は、調べてみると、イギリスの女性詩人Elizabeth Barrett Browning エリザベス・ブラウニング (= E. B.) の書簡集で、編者のS. R. Townshend Mayer による注釈がはさまったもの〔 Letters of Elizabeth Barrett Browning  [Letters of Elizabeth Barrett Browning Addressed to Richard Hengist Horne, with Commnets on Contemporaries], Vol. II. (London: Richard Bentley, 1877) <http://www.archive.org/stream/lettersaddresses02browuoft#page/34/mode/1up>〕。

　　いまはWEB上でいろんな人が "loquaciously yours" とか "Yours loquaciously" とか使っていて、"Loquaciously yours, Elle" という名前のブログもあったり（Elle さんの説明を見てなるほどと思ったのですけれど、 loquacious は簡単な英語だと wordy ですね）して、手紙のコトバとしてある程度有名になっているようですけれど、いつごろからポピュラーになったのかしら。『あしながおじさん』によるのかしら、などと考えてしまいます。

　　そう思いながらジュディーをまねてスティーヴンソンの手紙を読んでいたら、出てきました、出てきました。
