ウォルター・クレインとメイ・デー（中） Walter Crane and the May Day (2nd Part)

ウォルター・クレインはThe Workers' Maypole (1894) という版画をつくっています。労働者たちの五月柱。

　　前のブログ『カリフォルニア時間』の「October 29 メイポールを巡って (1) ――ルネサンス・フェアをめぐって (中の続きのつづき) 　 About the Maypole (1): Renaissance Fair (4)　　[America]」という、1年前の記事で、この絵を挿入しつつ、こんなふうに適当に書いていました。えーと、短く切ろうかと思いましたが、昔を懐かしんで長めに引きます――

[・・・・・・]　　五月祭は、日本語のウィキペディア「五月祭」を信用すれば豊穣の女神を祭る古代ローマの祝祭に由来し、キリスト教文化の中では春の到来を祝うものとなったそうです。

　　英語のWikipedia の "May Day" を見ると、 "Traditional May Day celebrations" という見出しで "Origins"から "United Kingdom" からあれこれ書かれているところがあるのですが、その前段の短い一節が、奇妙にアメリカのことを、しかも21世紀のことまで、書いています。――

May Day marks the end of the winter half of the year in the Northern hemisphere, and it has traditionally been an occasion for popular and often raucous celebrations, regardless of the locally prevalent political or religious establishment.　（メイデーは北半球において一年の半分の冬の終わりを告げるもので、伝統的に、土地の政治的ないし宗教的な体制とは無関係に、民衆のしばしば騒がしい祝祭の機会であった。）

As America became Christianized the pagan holidays lost their religious character and either changed into popular secular celebrations, as with May Day, or were replaced by new Christian holidays as with Christmas, Easter, and All Saint's Day. In the start of the twenty-first century, many neopagans began reconstructing the old traditions and celebrating May Day as a pagan religious festival again.　（アメリカがキリスト教化されると異教の祝日は宗教的な性格を失ない、メイデーのように民衆の世俗的な祝祭に変化するか、あるいはクリスマス、イースター、万聖節などのように新たなキリスト教の祝日にとってかわられるかした。21世紀の初頭に、多くのネオペーガンたちは古い伝統を再構築し、メイデーを異教の宗教的祭りとして再び祝い始めた。）

　　まじっすか。

　　そのメイデーの祭りの中心にあるのがメイポールと呼ばれる柱です。このあいだの記事では女子大でのメイポールの写真<http://www.bsc.edu/folklore/customary/maypole.htm>がありましたが、19世紀からどうやら少なくとも英米ではメイポールは丈が概して低くなり概して子供や女性がダンスをするという形態が広まったようです。しかし歴史的には――少なくとも17世紀までさかのぼれば――しばしば性的放縦との連想が高かった（であるがゆえにしばしばオカミから禁圧されることもあった）祭でした。

　　さらにややこしいのは――しかし、メイデーというと、こちらの連想のほうが強い――労働者の日という意義――

 　もっともこの絵はラファエロ前派とつながるWalter Craneのちょっと特殊な手工業的職業観と中世ロマンス的世界観のあらわれかもしれず、労働者のメイデー（「メーデー」ウィキペディア）はもっとドライな（つまるところ教会に迷惑がかからない祝日という）ところから設定されたものかもしれないのですが（よくわからんです）。

　　どうもそうではない。ともいいきれませんが・・・・・・細かくいうと、Walter Crane やウィリアム・モリスやジョン・ラスキンやラファエロ前派は、ロマンス的な世界観といっていいのかなあ、という気持ちはいまもあります。とりあえず、労働者のメイデーの起源と、それの、伝統的・祝祭的メイデーとのつながりのほうは、少なくともウォルター・クレインにはあって、ドライじゃない。ようです。

　　あらたなリクツをこねるのは控えます。ウォルター・クレインは1890年代から1900年代に、労働者のメイデーを鼓舞するような雑誌イラストやポスターやバナーやパンフレットやらを何枚も作成しました〔"Glossary of People: Cr" <http://marx.org/glossary/people/c/r.htm> は1890年代と限定していますが90年代に限られないみたい。一部はCartoons for the Cause という本に収められているようですけれど、詳細は未確認〕。それらは、アメリカの社会主義のプレスにさかんにリプリントされたということです〔Scott Molloy, "May Day," <http://www.lucyparsonsproject.org/haymarket/mayday.html> The Lucy Parsons Project〕。そして、必ずしもメイポール（五月柱）を描くものではありませんが、少なくとも花冠は春の祭を想起させるかもしれません。

　　そして、The Workers' Maypole を描いた1894年というのは、Haymarket Riot のアナキスト8人のポスターを描いた年でもあったのでした。

   この、シカゴのアナキストを称揚する絵で旗を広げる女性は、他の絵とは違って、女神ではなくて働く女性のように見えます（ちょっとジョジョの奇妙な冒険の登場人物の顔を思い起こさせるところがありますが）。それでも、両手を広げて意識の高揚と連帯を訴えるところや、「ポール」を持っているところなど、他の女神的な像と共通することがわかります。そして、1890年5月1日の国際的な労働者の日としてのメイデーの始まりが、1886年5月のシカゴのヘイマーケット事件を記念するものであることをクレインは知っていたのですから、半年前に発表された下の絵とのつながりはあると思うのです。

    そうなると、この五月柱の女神（これはどこぞで書いたように、柱＝ファルスというようなフロイト的性心理学的解釈を気持いいくらいに前もって否定してくれているのですけれど）を機軸として一連のメイデーの絵が描かれたように思われますけれど、実はその前からありますねん、少なくともメイデーの絵は。

  solidarity というのは「連帯」とか「団結」という意味です。"Freedom" （自由）を冠した女神が右手には "Fraternity" （友愛）を、左手には "Equality" （平等）の帯を差しのべて、Africa, America, Europe, Australia, Asia の五大陸を代表する人々を連帯させています。

1891年の "The Triumph of Labour" は、ウィリアム・モリスがこれまでのクレインのベストと呼んだ大作で、メイデーの行進をする労働者とその家族が描かれています。――
