ウォルター・クレインとメイ・デー（後） Walter Crane and the May Day (3rd Part)

    ウォルター・クレインは、一連のメイデーの絵を1880年代末からＬｉｂｅｒｔｙやJustice といったイギリスの社会主義系雑誌に掲載したりポスターを作成したりする前の、1881年、友人である詩人の John R. Wise と一緒に大判の詩画集 The First of May: A Fairy Masque 『五月一日――妖精の仮面劇』をつくり、52葉のペンシル画を寄せます。今たまたまカリフォルニアの古本屋からWEB で出ているのですけれど（ILAB-LILA [International League of Antiquarian Booksellers-Ligue Internationale de la Librairie Ancienne] のサイト）、つぎのような書誌情報です。――

Henry Sotheran & Co., London 1881 First Edition, Limited edition: No. 163 of 300 sets of India paper proofs 18 1/4 x 15 inches, two-tone tan cloth portfolio with large pictorial cover label, spine and flaps renewed, sides original, Signed by Crane, on limitation page, 57 separate sheets, composed of limitation sheet plus 56 sheets numbered I to LVI. Crane did his drawings, layout and lettering in pencil, and Goupil & Co. of Paris did the photo-engraving and printing. The images measure 9 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches and are on mounts measuring 15 x 18 1/4 inches. The cover label is rubbed but legible. Some wear and darkening to the edges and margins of the mounts; foxing to limitation sheet and some faint darkening to the last sheet, all other engravings are clean and bright. Housed in a modern oak box. Dedicated to Charles Darwin by the author and artist.

　　他の書誌情報（A Bookman's Catalogue: The Norman Colbeck Collection of Nineteenth-Century and Edwardian Poetry and Belle Lettres, Vol. 1 A-L (University of British Columbia Press, 1987), p. 173; Paul George Konody (1872-1933), The Art of Walter Crane (London: G. Bell and Sons, 1902), pp. 53-54）もあわせて勘案すると、どうやらクレインの名は書かれているけれど、詩人の名前は印刷されていなかった(anonymous) のでしょうか。ともあれ詩人と画家ふたりによるチャールズ・ダーウィンへの献辞があり、クレインの自筆署名とナンバリングが記された300部ではなくて200部限定の本でした。価格10 guineas――えーと1ギニーは21シリングだから・・・・・・10ポンド半くらいですか。かなり高額ですね。クレインによるペンシル画と詩文をフランスの印刷所がphotogravure で印刷。クレインはワイズとともにシャーウッドの森に滞在して、制作したもので、長い詩をすべてブロック体の手書きで書き写しています。コノディーの『ウォルター・クレインの芸術』（ロンドン、1902）に、3枚掲載されていますので貼り付けます。1枚目のは、五月柱を巡る妖精たちのダンスが描かれています。――
