馬繋ぎポスト Hitching Post or Horse Post

『あしながおじさん』の最初の手紙の一節。

But how can one be respectful to a person who wishes to be called John Smith?  Why couldn't you have picked out a name with a little personality?  I might as well write letters to Dear Hitching-Post or Dear Clothes-Pole [イギリス版はClothes-Prop]?  (Penguin Classics 13)
（でもジョン・スミスなんて呼ばれることを望んでいるひとに、どうして「かしこ」まったりできるでしょう。どうしてちょっと個性のある名前を選びだせなかったのですか。これではまるで馬繋ぎ柱さまとか物干し柱さま宛てに手紙を書いているようなものです。）

　　記事「拝啓繋柱様　Dear Hitching-Post」の補足です。 

　　OED こと『オックスフォード英語大辞典』では動詞 hitch を見出し語とした記述に派生語として（具体的には 5. a. trans. To catch as with a loop, noose, or hook; to fasten, esp. in a temporary way (and against force acting in one direction). Also fig. の意味がもっぱらと思われますが） hitching ならびにその連語が挙がっています。――"Hence hitching vbl. n. (also attrib. as in hitching-bar, -clamp, -post, -strap, -weight, i.e. one used in tethering a horse); hitching ppl. a." （vbl. n.　は動名詞、ppl. a. は現在分詞の形容詞 ）
   それで、特にアメリカ英語とか考えていなかったのですけれど、とりあえず "hitching-post" の最初の用例はアメリカのペンシルヴェニアがらみのものです。――

1842 J. L. SCOTT Jrnl. Missionary Tour Pennsylvania (1843) vi. 68 When at the door they alighted, and he rode off to the ‘hitching post’.

   アメリカニズム（アメリカ語・語法）の辞典のひとつ、Mitford M. Mathews の A Dictionary of Americanisms on Historical Principles (U of Chicago P, 1951) を見てみたら、OED に載っていない連語も含めて、いろいろとアメリカ英語に入れていました。――

＊[この細い星印は、コトバ自体（この場合は "hitching"）はアメリカ起源ではないという意味です]hitching, n. attrib.  Designating objects to which horses and mules [ラバ] may conveniently be hitched, as (1) hitching bar, (2) pole, (3) post, (4) rack, (5) rail.

　　なるほど、これだけいろんな名称があるなら、横木タイプのものは hitching bar とか hitching rail とか呼ばれただろうし hitching rack というのも幅があって柵みたいな形状なのだろうな、と推測されます。同時にやはり、ことばからすると hitching pole や hitching post は本来的には一本の棒・杭・柱というイメジ、そして、なんか post のほうは垂直に立っているという感じですよね。仮に総称として hitching post がありだとしても、です。
　　用例が順に挙がっているのですが、その (1) の最初のもの（1787年の用例）はスクウェア・ブラケットに入っていて、語源的なことと関わるという含みです（間が4メートルくらいで地面にさした2本の杭 (post) の上に横木を渡して、そこに馬の綱をかける釘（Pin）みたいなものを等間隔で打ちつけてある）。――

(1) [1787 ATTMORE Journal 37  There was a place for horses to stand, composed of two posts set in the ground at about 15 feet distance from each other on the tops rested a cross piece with Pins at intervals for fastening the Bridles, here stood a dozen horses.]  1877  CAMPION On Frontier 128 Beyond the fire, at a similar distance from it, a 'hitching-bar was put up, to fasten horses and mules to. ― (2) 1914 BOWER Flying U Ranch 63  [They rode to the hotel, tied their horses to the long hitching pole there and went in. ― (3) 1843 J. L. SCOTT Journal 68  When at the door they alighted, and he rode off to the 'hitching post.'  1948 Newsweek 30 Aug. 19/1  No ex-governors will put a halter or bridle on me and lead me to a hitching post. ― (4) 1904 HARBEN Georgians 146  Eric rode up to a hitching-rack and dismounted.  1947 CHALFANT Gold, Guns, & Ghost Towns 69  There [he] saw tied to a hitching rack a horse to which he took a fancy, so he mounted it and rode off. 　〔ここにあるスペース・改行の理由は不明〕
   (5) 1920 J. GREGORY Man to Man 103  A dozen saddle-horses were tied at the hitching-rail.  1948 Sat. Ev. Post 21 Aug. 99/2  An hour later, he leaned on the hitching rail at the post office and wished he could simply die and have it over with.

  　(2) の1914年の用例の hitching pole は "long" と形容されており、水平方向に長いのでしょう。(3) の hitching post は用例（最初のはOED と同じ用例です）だけでは水平か垂直かわかりませんが、公共の場ではなくて家の玄関にあるのだとしたら1本の棒の hitching post なのかな、という気はします（気がするだけです）。

　　そして、つぎのようなイラストが載っておるのでした。――

　　はじめ見たとき、なんやこれ、と思いました。まちがってるんじゃないの、とも。でもちゃんと "Hitching post or horse post" と書いてあります。or は「あれかこれか」ではなくて、「イコール」です。野球選手（マウンドの上のピッチャーかなんか）かと思ったのですが、ジョッキー（騎手）なのですね（目医者かな）。
