1年生10月10日の手紙。ミケランジェロのエピソードにつづけて、初日の失笑話を語ります。――

I made an awful mistake the first day.  Somebody mentioned Maurice Maeterlinck, and I asked if she was a Freshman.  That joke has gone all over the college.  But anyway, I'm just as bright in class as any of the others―and brighter than some of them!  (Penguin Classics)

　　後段の「比較」の文法＆論理問題も気にならなくはないのですが、とりあえず、こう訳しておきます。

　　はじめ、モーリスってどう考えても男の名前だよなー、と映画の『モーリス』を頭に浮かべ、それから栗原知代その他の顔を思い浮かべて、それきりにしたのですが、最近ハタと思いいたりました。誰かの話に出てきたのは「メーテルリンク」だけだったのではないかと。

　　LOL.  Maetel is a mysterious female character in Galaxy Express 999 [Ginga Tetsudo 999] by Matsumoto Reiji. The robot Maetel at the New Kitakyushu Airport answers questions from travellers.  She was designed by the Center for Human Quality of Life through Information Technology and the Kitakyushu Foundation for the Advancement of Industry Science and Technology.  Matsumoto Reiji, born in Kurume, Fukuoka in 1938, wrote Galaxy Express 999, inspired by Miyazawa Kenji's "Night on the Galactic Railroad [Ginga Tetsudo no Yoru]" and also by Maeterlinck's 1908 play The Blue Bird [L'Oiseau bleu].

　　はっ。モーリス・メーテルリンク Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck, 1862-1949は、ベルギー生まれの作家（詩人・劇作家）ですが、フランス語を話す家に育ち、若くしてパリに出て、だいたいフランス語で作品を発表したようです。フランス語読みだと「メーテルラーンク」、ベルギーというかフレミッシュというかフラマン語だと「マーターリンク」ですか。英語だと Maeterlinck は、「メイタァリンク」みたいな発音だと思うんすけれど、Maeter というファースト・ネームは（あるいは銀河鉄道の Maetel というファースト・ネームは）実は聞いたことないですし、調べても出てきません。でも　Linck さんというファミリー・ネームはあります。あと、Mae （メイ）さんというのは女性のファースト・ネームです。

　　19世紀末の象徴主義の影響を受けて、神秘主義を内包した作品を書いたメーテルリンクが、有名な童話劇『青い鳥』（聖杯探求物語のパタンを入れて生の意味を考えていると思われる作品）を発表するのが1907年、ノーベル賞を受賞するのが1911年ですから、ジュディーたちにとっては「時の」作家のひとりだったと考えられます。ジーン・ウェブスターが学生だった頃は・・・・・・既にそれなりに有名な作家だったでしょう。

　　ちょっとあとですが、1915年に [Mary Ellen] McDonald Clark が評伝 Maurice Maeterlinck: Poet and Philosopher (London: George Allen & Unwin, 1915) を出したときに、本の最初に載っていた広告――

　　1910年に同じ出版社から出た Maurice Maeterlinck: A Biographical Study という本（フランス人の Gérard Harry の著作の英訳書らしい）の冒頭に載っていた広告――

　　青い鳥はどこいった♪

　  1911 年にアメリカで出たEdward Thomas のMaurice Maeterlinck (New York: Dodd, Mead, 1911) の冒頭の "Note" を見ると、複数の出版社が英訳を出していて、『青い鳥』はロンドンのMethuen が出していることがわかりました。――
