社会主義者ジュディー、社会主義者ジーン (1) Judy the Socialist and Jean Webster the Socialist (1) [Daddy-Long-Legs]
花粉症の予報と微妙にズレた発症状態に首をひねる今日この頃です。でも目、少しかゆいです（3日前までほどではない）。
『あしながおじさん』3年生1月11日の手紙は、ニューヨークのジュリア・ペンドルトンの実家をクリスマス休暇に訪問したことの報告ですが、ジャーヴィス・ペンドルトンが社会主義者であることが語られると同時に、ジュディー自身も社会主義者になるという言明が行なわれます。――
I only saw Master Jervie once when he called at tea time, and then I didn't have a chance to speak to him alone. It was really disappointing after our nice time last summer. I don't think he cares much for his relatives--and I am sure they don't care much for him! Julia's mother says he's unbalanced. He's a Socialist--except, thank Heaven, he doesn't let his hair grow and wear red ties. She can't imagine where he picked up his queer ideas; the family have been Church of England for generations. He throws away his money on every sort of crazy reform, instead of spending it on such sensible things as yachts and automobiles and polo ponies. He does buy candy with it though! He sent Julia and me each a box for Christmas.
You know, I think I'll be a Socialist, too. You wouldn't mind, would you, Daddy? They're quite different from Anarchists; they don't believe in blowing people up. Probably I am one by rights; I belong to the proletariat. I haven't determined yet just which kind I am going to be. I will look into the subject over Sunday, and declare my principles in my next. （一度だけ、ジャーヴィー坊ちゃまがお茶のときにおいでになったときに会いました。が、ふたりでお話をする機会はありませんでした。去年の夏は楽しい時間をもったので、ほんとにがっかりでした。どうやら彼は親類をあんまり好きじゃないみたいです――で、親類のほうでも好いていないことは確か！ ジュリアのおかあさんは彼はバランス悪い、と言ってます。彼は社会主義者 (Socialist) です――が、ありがたいことに、長髪で赤ネクタイではありません。ヘンな思想にどこでかぶれたのかおかあさんには想像もつかないのだそうでです。一族は代々英国国教会派だったそうですから。あらゆる種類のミョウチクリンな改革には金を投げ出し、ヨットとか自動車とかポロ競技の仔馬とかいったまっとうなものには少しも使わないのだそうです。でも！ そのお金でキャンディーをお買いになりますｗ。クリスマスに、ジュリアとわたしに一箱ずつ送ってくださいました。
わたしもいずれ社会主義者 (Socialist) になるだろうと考えています。かまいませんですよね、ダディー？ 社会主義者は無政府主義者 (Anarchists) とはまったく違います。人民に爆弾をぶつけたりなんかしません。わたしは当然のごとく社会主義者になるべきなのかもしれません。プロレタリア（無産階級）出身ですもの。でもどういう社会主義者になるかはまだ決心していません。日曜日にその問題をじゅうぶん考えて、このつぎのときにわたしの信条を宣言することにします。）
社会主義者としての主義・信条 (principles) について、つぎの手紙で書かれています。――
Dear Comrade,
Hooray! I'm a Fabian.
That's a Socialist who's willing to wait. We don't want the social revolution to come tomorrow morning; it would be too upsetting. We want it to come very gradually in the distant future, when we shall all be prepared and able to sustain the shock.
In the meantime, we must be getting ready, by instituting industrial, educational and orphan asylum reforms.

訳すだけでなんだか疲れてしまいました。また明日～♪
と、トンズラしようと思ったのですけれど、ふと本を見ると、まだありました。
同じく3年生の5月下旬（22日ごろ）の手紙。――
Did I tell you that I have been elected a member of the Senior Dramatic Club? Very recherché organization. Only seventy-five members out of one thousand. Do you think as a consistent Socialist that I ought to belong? (Penguin Classics 103-4)
（シニア演劇クラブのメンバーに選ばれたってお伝えしていたでしょうか？ とても洗練的な組織なんですよ。千人のなかから75人選ばれるだけ。不動の社会主義者としてわたしはそれに入ったものでしょうか、どうでしょう？）
そして4年12月26日の手紙。――
Haven't you any sense? Don't you know that you mustn't give one girl seventeen Christmas presents? I'm a Socialist, please remember; do you wish to turn me into a Plutocrat? (Penguin Classics 113)
（分別がおありですか？ ひとりの女の子に17のクリスマス・プレゼントを贈るべきではない、ということ、知らないのですか？ わたしは社会主義者です、おぼえておいてください。あなたはわたしを金権家に転向させたいのでしょうか？）
