すべての子供が知っておくべき詩 Poems That Every Child Should Know [歌・詩 ]

バーネットの『白いひと The White People』の献辞に掲げられたジョン・バローズの詩をWEBで探索していたときに出会ったのが、メアリー・エリザベス・バート Mary Elizabeth Burt, 1850-1918 の編んだ Poems That Every Child Should Know: A Selection of the Best Poems of All Times for Young People (初版 1904) でした。

  バートというのはイリノイ州の学校の先生をしてからシカゴの教育局に入って、青少年に啓蒙的な古典(プラトンとか)や文学のアンソロジーを編むだけでなく、個別の作家(バローズとかユージーン・フィールドとか)のアンソロジーを編集した女性の文人のようです。

  この本は、現在も例のKessinger が復刻版を出しています。でも Internet Archive に音源もテクストも入っているし、Project Gutenberg でも E-text 化されている。そして、文学史でとりあげられるような詩人だけでなくて、スティーヴン・フォスターの歌謡も入っています(90番の「ケンタッキーの我が家 My Old Kentucky Home」と91番の「故郷の人々 Old Folks at Home」)。Bates の "America the Beautiful" は入ってないけれど、アメリカ国歌は入っています。

  これらの詩を全部知ってる子供がいたら、賢いだろうなあ、と思います。

   六部構成で、全187篇。350ページを超える本です。詩のタイトルのあとに解説が添えられています。ううむ。51番は自分の作品ではないですか。お茶目というか厚顔というか。
